Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler (b. Oct. 7, 1770, Aarau, Switzerland-d. Nov. 20, 1843) well known geodesist, was born in Switzerland and studied at the University of Bern. He was the first Superintendent of the Coast Survey (redesignated the Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1878) as well as Superintendent of the Office of Standard Weights and Measures, a position he held until his death in 1843. Coming to America in 1805, he won Jefferson's help for his plan to survey the Atlantic coast, and from 1816 through 1818 he was in charge fo the work. In 1832 he was appointed to head the Coast Survey, which had lapsed since his previous work.
