Warnshuis graduated from Hope College in 1897 and from New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1900. He was licensed and ordained a minister by the Reformed Church in America in 1900. That same year he was commissioned by the Board of Foreign Missions as a missionary to Amoy, China. He was one of the first secretaries of the International Missionary Council. After his retirement from the I.M.C. he played a formative part in what is now the Church World Service.
