Hide Profile

George Frederick Gundelfinger (1884 – 1974) graduated from the Sheffield Scientific School in 1906. He received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Yale in 1909, and served as a professor of Mathematics from 1909 – 1913. After leaving Yale, Gundelfinger taught at several other institutions before retiring to Pennsylvania. He began a campaign to improve the morality of Yale men through his publication, "The New Fraternity." He was prolific and frequently mailed his works to the student body and administrators. The material he sent was considered offensive by the Yale administration, which brought Gundelfinger to the attention of the Postmaster General and Attorney General of Pennsylvania. Gundelfinger was tried and convicted of mailing obscene material through the U.S. postal system.

The Yale Council on Community Affairs (YCCA) was organized under the Office of the President, at the direction of President Kingman Brewster, on April 9, 1968, to deal with problems in the New Haven community and to initiate programs related to human and neighborhood development. C. Tracy Barnes, special assistant to the president, was appointed chairman. In June of 1969, Barnes became ill and Ernest Osborne was made acting chairman. Reorganization began and in October Osborne became chairman of YCCA. As part of the reorganization, it was recommended that an Office of Community Affairs Development (OCAD) be established to take an active responsibility for working with neighborhood, community, faculty, and student organizations and to advise the YCCA. The Council was to have a policy advisory role only. In 1973-1975, the OCAD was put under the Office of the Secretary and later discontinued. The Office of Community Relations (ca. 1976-1990) and the Office of New Haven and State Affairs are two later offices that served the same function.
