David Brydie Mitchell (1766-1837) was born in Scotland and came to Savannah in 1783. He studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was Solicitor-General of Georgia in 1795 and a member of the Georgia Legislature in 1796. He was appointed Major-General of Militia in 1804. Mitchell served as Governor of Georgia, 1809-1813, and 1815-1817. After his term of office as Governor, he was appointed U.S. Agent to the Creek Nation, with whom he concluded a treaty in 1818. He was a firm supporter of public education.

Mitchell was dismissed from his agency post after Georgia governor John Clark, a political opponent, charged him with smuggling African slaves into the country.
