The Gould Family Papers center around Carl Freylinghuysen Gould and Dorothy Fay Gould. Carl Gould was a prominent Seattle architect and the founder of the University of Washington's Department of Architecture. Gould designed the Seattle Asian Art Museum (previously the Seattle Art Museum), the Marine Hospital (now the headquarters of Amazon.com), and over 20 buildings on the University of Washington campus, among other notable structures around the Puget Sound area. His parents, Charles Judson Gould and Annie Westbrook Gould, were decendants of prominent New York families. His wife, Dorothy Fay Gould, was an eminent Seattle citizen, often writing articles and giving lectures on Northwest history. Besides history, Dorothy Gould was active in numerous social and civic organizations, including the Seattle Garden Club and the Seattle Historical Society. Her parents, John Purinton Fay and Alice Isabel Ober Fay, moved to Seattle from Massachusetts in 1889, whereupon John Fay established a law practice and became involvd in politics. Their eldest son, Temple Segewick Fay, became a noted neurosurgeon. Carl Freylinghuysen Gould and Dorothy Fay Gould had three children: Anne, John, and Carl F. Gould, Jr.
