Biographical Information

Marian Cleeves Diamond was born in Glendale, California on November 11, 1926. She received her B.A. in 1948 and M.A. in 1949 from U.C. Berkeley, and in 1953 she became the first woman to receive a doctorate in Anatomy at U.C. Berkeley. Her career at Berkeley progressed from lecturer in Anatomy in 1960 to being appointed as a full Professor of Anatomy in 1974. From 1970 to 1972 she served as Associate Dean of Berkeley's College of Letters and Science. She was appointed Director of the Lawrence Hall of Science in 1990, a position she held until returning to teaching fulltime in 1995. She is the author of over 150 scientific articles in professional journals and has written several books including Enriching Heredity and The Human Brain Coloring Book .

Diamond's research focuses on brain function and environmental effects on the brain. In addition to her academic work, Diamond has been a strong advocate for programs geared towards increasing children's interest in the sciences. Diamond has taught and lectured in various universities around the world and has received countless awards and honors.

At the time of this writing Diamond continues to teach regularly at U.C. Berkeley.
