Richard Hughes was a British author, best known for his novel, A High Wind in Jamaica. Born in Surrey, Hughes was a precocious writer; he won scholarships to Charterhouse School, where he met Robert Graves, and Oriel College. He led a colorful, eccentric existence, writing poetry and short stories, and found success with the controversial novel A High Wind in Jamaica, notable for its portrayal of children among pirates. Never a prolific writer, Hughes took his time to create accomplished, distinctive prose; his unfinished trilogy, The Human Predicament, remains a masterful if incomplete work. He also wrote film scripts, plays, and stories for children.
