Sir Alan McNicoll joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1922, became a Rear Admiral in 1958. He was Deputy Secretary of Department of Defence, 1958-1959; Second Naval Member of the Naval Board, 1960-1961; Chief of the Australian Naval Staff, Canberra, 1965-1968, and Flag Officer Commanding H.M. Australian Fleet 1962-1964.
