Thomas Frognall Dibdin was born in Calcutta, and orphaned at a young age; he was raised by relatives in England, and educated at Oxford. He trained to practice law, but took holy orders instead. Throughout his enigmatic and somewhat controversial life as an author, librarian, bibliographer, and bibliophile, Dibdin contributed significantly to revitalizing the popularity of books on England. He wrote poetry, and essays celebrating books, but was best known for his numerous bibliographies, which were popular and remain valuable, despite being full of errors that exposed him to ridicule. Dibdin was a founding member of the Roxburghe Club, the first of many English book clubs.
