Knight Dunlap was born on November 21, 1875 in Diamond Spring California. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of California at Berkeley. After a year of graduate school, he transferred to Harvard where he received his Masters and doctorate degree. Dunlap then returned to Berkeley as an instructor.

In 1906, Dunlap joined George M. Stratton at John Hopkins University where he developed most of his research in behaviorism and psychobiology.. Much of his experimental work was completed at John Hopkins.The department of psychology split in 1916 and Dunlap headed to the Homewood Division where he remained until 1936.

Dunlap was the chair of anthropology and psychology for the Medical Research Laboratory of the Air Service during World War I, and his research in the Army piqued his interest in the field of the vestibular system. Dunlap returned to the University of California at Los Angeles where he developed graduate instruction and a laboratory.

Dunlap died in 1949.
