The National Parks Association of the ACT Inc was inaugurated in 1960 to lobby for a National Park for the National Capital. As a result of its efforts, including submissions and a checklist of flora and fauna, Gudgenby was initially declared a Nature Reserve in 1979 and then incorporated into Namadgi National Park, proclaimed in 1984. NPA ACT's aims include the promotion of national parks and of measures for the protection of fauna and flora, scenery, natural features and cultural heritage in the ACT and elsewhere; the reservation of specific areas; promotion of, and education for, conservation; and the planning of land use to achieve conservation. The Association organises outdoor activities including field trips, work parties, day walks and pack walks, and publishes a quarterly Bulletin, field guides, books and proceedings of conferences and symposia. The collection consists of records of the NPA ACT and related organisations and activities. Minutes, reports, constitution and business files, membership lists, financial records, publications and promotions files, newscuttings, and files re various conferences and symposia. Files of research, submissions and background on a wide variety of cognate subjects, particularly Namadgi, Kosciusko and other national or state parks, Black Mountain communication tower (Telstra Tower) and nature reserve, woodchipping, and the federal enquiry into off-road vehicles. Personal files of Nancy Burbidge and Neville Esau, and the records of the Canberra Walking and Touring Club are also included.
