Stanley-Brown, Mary Garfield, 1867-1947

Mary Garfield Stanley-Brown (1867-1947), known as Mollie as a girl, was the daughter of assassinated President Garfield.

Mary (Mollie) Garfield Stanley-Brown was the daughter of President James A. Garfield and Lucretia Rudolph Garfield. She married Joseph Stanley-Brown in 1888 and had three children; Rudolph, Ruth, and Margaret. Joseph Stanley-Brown had served as Garfield's private secretary in Washington, and organized the papers and books in the memorial library dedicated to the late president at the family home, Lawnfield, Mentor, Ohio. Stanley-Brown worked for the U.S. Geologic Survey, the National Geographic Society, in the railroad industry, and as a banker. The Stanley-Brown family lived first in Washington, and then in Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, New York. Rudolph Stanley-Brown was a partner in Abram Garfield's architectural firm in Cleveland, Ohio, and married Katherine Oliver in 1922. Margaret Stanley-Brown was a surgeon. Ruth Stanley-Brown attended Vassar College, worked in publishing for several years in New York, and married Herbert Feis in 1922. In 1962, Ruth published a children's book, Mollie Garfield in the White House, based on her mother's diaries.

Mary (Mollie) Garfield Stanley-Brown (1867-1947) was the daughter of Lucretia Rudolph Garfield and United States President James Abram Garfield. She married Joseph Stanley-Brown in 1888 and had three children, Rudolph (Lad), Ruth (Rufus) and Margaret (Peggy).

Joseph Brown had been President Garfield's private secretary in Washington, and at the request of Lucretia Garfield, organized the papers and books in the memorial library dedicated to the late President Garfield at the family home, Lawnfield, in Mentor, Ohio. Brown adopted the family name of his English immigrant grandfather and became Stanley-Brown when he married. He worked for the United States Geologic Survey, the National Geographic Society, and in the railroad industry, for E. H. Harriman, for the Long Island Railroad, and as a banker with Fisk and Robinson in New York, representing railroad interests.

The Stanley-Browns and their children lived first in Washington, and then in Cold Springs Harbor, Long Island, New York. Rudolph was a partner in Abram Garfield's architectural firm in Cleveland, Ohio, and married Katherine Oliver in 1922. Margaret became a surgeon. Ruth attended Vassar, worked in publishing for several years in New York, and married Herbert Feis in 1922, and they adopted Mary Felicia in 1934. Ruth published a children's book Mollie Garfield in the White House in 1962, based on her mother's diaries. Feis was an economist, professor and writer, worked at the State Department from 1931 to 1949, and then joined the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
