Katherine Swartzbaugh Frankforter was a student at Black Mountain College (under her maiden name, Swartzbaugh) for the 1944 Summer Art Institute. The American artist was a native of Toledo, Ohio, graduated from Smith College in art history, and returned to work at the Toledo Museum of Art for a year. After her summer at Black Mountain she lived in New York City. She later moved to Mill Valley, California.
