George Erml (1945-2008) was born in Czechoslovakia and graduated from the prestigious Film Academy (FAMU) in Prague. After he graduated, he began a career in portraiture and architectural photography. In 1980, Erml and his wife and son immigrated to New York City where he established himself as a freelance photographer. He began taking pictures of glass, working with artists such as Tom Patti, Dan Dailey, Dale Chihuly and Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová. Erml quickly became sought after for his ability to capture the beauty of the interior spaces in glass.
During the course of his career, Erml held nine solo exhibitions in the United States, Denmark, Italy and the Czech Republic. The George Eastman House in Rochester, NY, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, the National Museum of Photography in Jindrichuv Hradec, and the Moravian Gallery in Brno all have photographs by Erml in their permanent collections.
