Founder of Cooperstown, N.Y., member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York State, and first judge of the Otsego County, N.Y. Court of Common Pleas. Cooper was the father of author James Fenimore Cooper.

Founder of Cooperstown, New York and the father of James Fenimore Cooper, William Cooper was the first judge of Otsego County and a leading political arbiter of upstate New York during the 1790's. He was twice elected to Congress as a Federalist. As a major land developer for the region, he not only bought and sold property for himself but was a land agent for numerous other large patents.
