Elizabeth Hall was born September 17, 1929 in Bakersfield, California. She completed an A.B. degrees at California State University, Fresno in 1962 and pursued post-graduate studies 1963-1965. She married Fred Roy Mason in 1946 and divorced in 1966. She married Scott O'Dell in 1967. She received a number of awards for her books.
