Anna Letitia Aikin Barbauld was a respected English author and educator. She and her family were Dissenters, and their strong beliefs and awkward social position were integral to her development as a writer. She and her husband ran a school, and she also found time to write poetry for children and adults, hymns, influential social and political tracts, and literary biography, and to serve as a literary critic and editor. She sometimes wrote with her brother, John Aikin.
