Upon becoming prime minister in March 1782, the Marquis of Rockingham appointed Lord Cavendish as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Edmund Burke as paymaster general of the British forces.

Burke fulfilled the duties of this office for only a few months turning in his resignation following the death of Rockingham in July of that year.
