Alfred Newton (1829-1907), zoologist, was born in Geneva on 11 June 1829, and entered Magdalene College, Cambridge, in 1848 (B.A., 1853). He carried out ornithological research work with the ornithologist John Woolley in Lapland (1855) and Iceland (1858), and independently in the West Indies (1857) and Spitsbergen (1864). In 1866 he became Professor of Zoology at Cambridge University, where he pioneered zoological study. He was made Fellow of the Royal Society in 1870. Newton died on 7 June 1907.

Alfred Newton (1829-1907) studied at the University of Cambridge 1848-1853. He then studied wildlife while travelling abroad in Europe and America until 1862.

He was Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at the University of Cambridge from 1866 to 1907.

Living at Magdalene College, he pursued his interest in all branches of ornithology. He had a large collection of specimens as well as an extensive library.

His collections were bequeathed to the University.
