Arthur Hugh Clough was a poet and educator, perhaps best remembered for his distinctively ironic verse. Born in Liverpool, his family emigrated to South Carolina in his youth; Arthur returned to England in 1828, and attended Rugby School, where he became close to headmaster Thomas Arnold and his sons. He was educated at Oxford University, where he began to develop his poetic style, and where he became caught up in the religious controversy of the times. He became an educator, primarily at England's education office, and devoted time to the cause of his wife's cousin, Florence Nightingale. He wrote throughout his life, though his output was small, and he is remembered as one of the most intellectual, mature, and modern of the Victorian poets.
