Missionary and evangelist, born in Canada in 1859; ordained and married to Rosalind Bell-Smith in 1887; began missionary work in China in 1888; fled China from the Boxer Rebellion in 1900; began itinerant village preaching in China in 1901 primarily in Honan Province; observed spiritual revival in Korea in 1907 and led a revival in Manchuria in 1908 and subsequently throughout China; concluded ministry in China in 1934, but continued evangelistic work in North America until his death in 1936.
