Espada was born in 1957 in Brooklyn, New York. He received his B.A. degree in history from the University of Wisconsin (1981) and a J.D. degree from Northeastern University School of Law (1985). He is currently Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he teaches courses in Latino poetry, creative writing, multiculturalism and literature in translation. Espada has written extensively in English on the plight of Hispanics in the United States and is an outspoken advocate for social justice in Spanish-speaking countries.
