Eden Phillpotts was a prolific and popular British author. He was born in India and raised in England; while working for an insurance firm, he practiced writing every night, and his first book was published in 1888. Orderly, meticulous, and popular, he had a long and extraordinarily productive career; best known as a novelist, he also wrote essays, plays, short stories, poetry, and children's literature. His best-known works are probably the Dartmoor Cycle of novels, which describe the countryside and way of life in minute detail.
