Pierre-Jean de Béranger (1780-1857) was a French songwriter and satirist. After Napoleon's fall, he composed songs and poems satirizing the restored Bourbon monarchy and its government, leading to dismissal from his university post in 1821 and imprisonment. Nevertheless, his songs brought him instant fame and financial success. After the Revolution of 1848, he was elected a member of the new democratic parliament. Among his best-known poems are "Le Roi d'Yvetot", "Le Dieu des pauvres gens", "Le Sacre de Charles le Simple", "La Grand-Mère", and "Le Vieux Sergent."
