Margaret Oliphant was born in Scotland, and published her first novel at age twenty-one. After the death of her husband, she took to writing to support her young family, and showed remarkable industry, ultimately publishing more than one hundred books and more than two hundred articles, chiefly in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. Her work was enormously popular, and she was reported to have been Queen Victoria's favorite author.
