Judge, politician, and director of the U.S. Mint (1794-1795). Born in Pocotaligo, S.C., DeSaussure studied law in Philadelphia and was admitted to the South Carolina bar in 1785; in that year he married Elizabeth Ford, and he and his brother-in-law Timothy Ford established a law firm together. In 1808 he was elected a chancellor of the state, an office he held until 1838. Henry Alexander DeSaussure (1788-1865) was his son.
