F. W. L. Leichhardt, explorer, was born in Prussia. He emigrated to Sydney in 1842 and the following year embarked on the first of series of explorations into Northern New South Wales and Queensland. In 1848 during his expedition to cross the continent from Brisbane to Perth he and his companions were lost without trace.

Between 1834 and 1836 Leichhardt studied at the University of Berlin. From 1837 until 1842 he studied medical and natural science at the Royal College of Surgeons, the British Museum and the Jardin des Plantes.

Emmeline Maria was the youngest daughter of Hannibal Macarthur of Parramatta. In 1847 she married George F. Leslie of Canning Downs. A few years after Leslie's death in 1860 she again married, to Captain Vigant De Falbe of the Danish Navy. She claimed to be the last woman to see Leichhardt before his final journey.

Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt was one of Australia's most prominent naturalists and explorers.

S. H. A. Marsh, a harpist, set himself up as a professor of harmony and an importer of pianos, spending ten years at Sydney. He went to Melbourne in 1852 and to San Francisco in 1872. He toured the Presidencies of India with the violinist Ravac in 1846.
