Ellis Reynolds Shipp was born on January 20, 1847, and moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah, with her parents in 1852. Her mother died in 1861, and after her father's remarriage Shipp lived with her grandparents. She married Milford Shipp in May 1866 and moved for a time to Fillmore before settling in Salt Lake City.
