United Neighborhood Houses of New York

United Neighborhood Houses, founded in 1900 as the Association of Neighborhood Workers and incorporated in 1920 as United Neighborhood Houses of New York, is a coordinating link for the city's settlement houses. UNH provides its members with information and technical and fund-raising services, and is an advocate on behalf of settlement work as well as of the settlements' constituents.

The United Neighborhood Houses of New York is a federation of settlements whose records contain information on housing, unemployment, relief, juvenile delinquency. The records exemplify the day to day operation of UNH, problems common to voluntary associations, settlement work and philosophy, the Great Depression, immigration and Americanization, and the development of professional social work.

The United Neighborhood Houses of New York, Inc. (UNH) was founded by Mary K. Simkhovitch and John L. Elliott in 1900 as the Association of Neighborhood Workers, a federation of York City settlement houses. The Association was reorganized during World War I and incorporated as United Neighborhood Houses in 1920. The organization worked to disseminate information, promote reform, unify settlement houses, and facilitate coordinated projects. During the 1960s, UNH responded to the federal government's Great Society programs with a new emphasis on seeking funding for member houses or for its own programs. More than one hundred years since its inception, UNH continues to unify and provide services for its members; advocate for social issues; and work for public policy, community resources, and social services.
