Joseph Joachim was an Austro-Hungarian composer, conducter, and teacher, generally acclaimed as the preeminent violinist of his day. A child prodigy, he had several teachers, but was most influenced by Mendelssohn. He had direct contact with many of the leading composers of his day, and numerous works were written specifically for him; his own compositions, while valuable, are seldom played because of the demanding technical requirements. He was acclaimed throughout Europe, and was instrumental in introducing significant composers and works.
