George L. McKay was Curator (1923-1959) of the Grolier Club, a New York City bibliophile society, and also served as its librarian (1944-1959). From 1947 to 1959 he was advisor to the Edwin J. Beinecke Collection at Yale (now housed in the Beinecke Rare Book Library) and compiled a six volume catalog of Beinecke's collection of Robert Louis Stevenson material. McKay was also the author of numerous articles on the book arts and author/compiler of twenty bibliographies and catalogs in this field. From about 1935 until his death McKay was a member of the Typophiles, an informal organization (founded 1933) which brought together persons working in the printing trades, book arts and libraries who shared a love of typography and of beautifully printed books.
