Hide Profile
Clay L. Cochran (1914-1982) was a professor of economics at the University of Oklahoma from 1949-1952, an economist and department director with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association from 1952-1958, an agricultural labor specialist in the Industrial Union Department of the AFL-CIO from 1958-1966, and executive director of Rural America from 1966-1979.
Cochran was denied tenure at the University of Oklahoma in 1952 in part due to alleged communist and socialist sympathies. These allegations affected later employment applications for federal government positions when background investigations were conducted by the Civil Service Commission, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency.
