Nicolas Baudin, navigator and explorer was given command by the Institut de France, of an expedition to complete the cartography of New Holland. Baudin died in Mauritius in 1803.

Nicolas Thomas Baudin, 1754-1803, was born at a seaport town on the Ile-de-Re, a 'bright island' off the west coast of France. He made himself famous for safely transporting living plants and animals across the oceans and to Europe. He is best remembered for his famous encounter with the more well known English explorer, Matthew Flinders. They were both charting the coast of New Holland. (Australia) from opposite directions. Baudin reached the Derwent River, Tasmania, on 23 January 1802.
