Sir Adolphus William Ward (1837-1924), historian, was born at Hampstead, Middlesex, on 2 December 1837. He was educated in Germany and Bury St Edmunds before entering Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1855 (B.A., 1859; M.A., 1862), where he became a Fellow in 1862. He entered the Inner Temple in 1860, and was called to the bar in 1866, but never practised law. Ward was Professor of History and English Language and Literature at Owens College, Manchester, 1866-1897, and Vice-Chancellor, 1886-1890 and 1894-1896, and principal, 1889-1897, of Victoria University. He was Master of Peterhouse, 1900-1914, and Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University in 1901. From 1901 to 1912 he edited the Cambridge modern history . Ward was knighted in 1913. He died in Cambridge on 19 June 1924.
