Schang, F.C.

Frederick Christian Schang, Jr. was born December 15, 1893 in New York City. In 1915 he graduated from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. One of his early positions was as a reporter for the New York Tribune. He then worked for the Metropolitan Music Bureau, which later merged with other agencies in 1930 to form the Columbia Concerts Corporation (name later changed to Columbia Artists Management, Inc., or CAMI). Schang was elected president of CAMI in 1948, and while he officially retired in 1963, he remained active in the company into the 1970s. During his career he managed a range of performing artists, including Enrico Caruso, Grace Moore, and Lily Pons. He was also responsible for the American debuts of two Russian musicians in the 1950s – pianist Emil Gilels, and violinist David Oistrakh. In his spare time, Schang collected visiting cards of musicians and other celebrities, amassing enough to publish four volumes of the images. He retired to Delray Beach, FL, and died there in August 1990.

Frederick Christian Schang, Jr. (1893-1990) was a prominent agent active in the music industry from the 1930s through the 1970s.

A graduate of the Columbia School of Journalism, one of Schang's early positions was as a reporter for the New York Tribune. He then worked for the Metropolitan Music Bureau, which later merged with other agencies in 1930 to form the Columbia Concerts Corporation (name later changed to Columbia Artists Management, Inc., or CAMI).
