Patrick Kevin Foley (1856-1937) was born in Ireland and came to the United States in 1881. He started as a travelling book salesman and later became a general agent for subscription book houses. He developed into a bibliographical expert and a great antiquarian bookseller, starting in business in 1896. His knowledge of New England authors was considerable and in 1897 he published American Authors, 1795-1895. A Bibliography of First and Notable Editions Chronologically Arranged with Notes. Foley resided in Boston, where he died.

Patrick Kevin Foley was the owner of Hamilton Place, a Boston bookshop, and an authority on American first editions. His pioneering bibliography, American authors, 1795-1895, was a groundbreaking work and continues to be a standard reference for book collectors.
