Thomas H. English was a member of the Princeton Class of 1918 who later went on to become a professor of english at Emory University. While a student at Princeton he developed a lifelong friendship with Department of English professor Morris W. Croll, a renowned literary scholar.

Thomas Hopkins English, educator, author, and editor, was born in Dow, Illinois, 28 December 1895, and died 8 January 1992 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was married to Rachel Marshall Willet (d. 1975). A graduate of Princeton University, he taught English at Wisconsin University (1920-1921), Yale University (1924-1925), Princeton summer school (1923-1927), and Emory University (1925-1964), where he chaired the Department of English (1942-1952), edited the EMORY UNIVERSITY QUARTERLY (1945-1964), EMORY SOURCES AND REPRINTS (1943-1958), and other Emory publications, and authored a history of Emory University, textbooks, and other publications.
