U.S. Consul in Belgium and France (1881-1887) and anthropologist.

While in Europe Wilson travelled, recording his observations and conducting archaelogical research. In 1887 he returned to the U.S. to become the Curator of Archaeology at the Smithsonian. Before his appointment as consulate Wilson practiced law in Iowa and served as a Colonel with the 2nd Iowa Infantry during the Civil War.
