O. Henry was born as William Sydney Porter on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, NC. He worked as a pharmacist in Greensboro and moved to Texas for his health in 1882 where he became a ranch hand. Porter relocated to Austin, TX and worked as a pharmacists, served as draftsman at the Texas General Land Office, a teller at First National Bank of Austin, and started a humorous weekly magazine, The Rolling Stone. He also wrote for the Houston Post. In 1898 Porter was found guilty of embezzlement from First National Bank. After his release from jail, he moved to New York City, 1902 and began writing. He is best known for short stories with surprise endings. He died June 5, 1910 in New York City.
