Francis Turner Palgrave was raised in London and educated at Oxford; he worked for the Privy Council's Education Office from 1849-1884. In his day, he was known as a poet, critic, and editor, publishing several books of verse and numerous critical essays on art and literature. He is probably best known for the well-considered anthology, Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language, which has been inordinately popular and has never been out of print. Palgrave also had many famous friendships, notably with Lord Tennyson and Matthew Arnold. After his retirement from civil service, he held the poetry chair at Oxford for two successive terms.
