Vittorio Giannini, first president and the guiding light of the North Carolina School of the Arts, was born into a musical family on October 19, 1903, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied in Europe and at Juilliard, before going on to teach at the Curtis Institute, the Manhattan School of Music, and of course, Juilliard. Giannini was a renowned operatic composer who also composed chamber music and choral works. When, at 62, he saw a chance to make his dream of a new kind of school for the performing arts come true, he jumped at the chance -even though he was recovering from a heart attack. Through the efforts of men like Governor Terry Sanford and John Ehle the dream eventually became a reality, and Giannini later accepted the presidency of the new school. Giannini's administration was marked by a "personal touch" as he carried on all his artistic and administrative duties while meeting with parents, students, and staff. But the school was forced to press onward without its guiding force when Vittorio Giannini died of a heart attack in New York City on November 25, 1966.
