Author, essayist, and editor Hamilton Wright Mabie was born and educated in New York, earning a law degree from Columbia. He practiced law for several years without enthusiasm, leaving to work for Lyman Abbot's weekly magazine, Christian Union, later renamed Outlook. Mabie gradually established himself as an author, writing numerous books and essays on a variety of subjects. Although he is generally remembered for his overly sentimental self-help books, he made important contributions to American literary tastes with his critical essays and books in the years before World War I.

Author Hamilton Wright Mabie was primarily a social and literary critic and observer. His reputation has been diminished by the numerous volumes he wrote to provide spiritual uplift to the general public, but in his day Wright was an influential critic, an integral component of American literary society, and popular lecturer and commencement speaker.
