Jeanne Caroline Smith Carr was born in Vermont and married Ezra Slocum Carr, a physician and professor, who taught at the University of Wisconsin before they moved to California in 1869. Ezra became a professor at the University of California, and in 1875 when he was elected state superintendent of public instruction, his wife was made assistant superintendent. The Carrs settled in Pasadena in 1880, where Jeanne's long interest in botany inspired the development of their home, "Carmelita," a garden showplace and center of cultural influence.
