William Thomas Stead was a controversial British journalist, editor, and social reformer, known for his sensational exposes. Born in Northumberland and largely educated at home, he became editor of the Darlington Northern Echo in 1871. He turned the paper into a formidable platform for his many causes, and in 1880 went to London as co-editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, where his sensational campaigns made him one of the most powerful newspapermen in England. His innovative use of "new journalism" techniques was influential and successful. He also pioneered a series of affordable editions of his exposes and classic works. Stead was lost at sea when the Titanic sank; many eyewitnesses reported seeing him leading women and children to the safety of the lifeboats.
