Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor. Three months later it was sent to Harper's Ferry, Va., where it guarded the upper Potomac as part of Bank's division.

Shays' Rebellion was an armed uprising in several Massachusetts counties, 1786-1787, in response to economic hardship affecting farmers in particular. Daniel Shays led a regiment in an unsuccessful attempt to take the federal arsenal at Springfield, Jan., 1787. Major General Benjamin Lincoln defeated Shays' forces at Petersham in Feb., 1787, effectively ending the uprising. Captain Roger Brown of Concord, Mass., led a company of Concord men to Worcester, Springfield, and Amherst to fight the insurgents.
