U.S. Army officer, engineer, and Governor of the Arkansas Territory (1825-1828). George Izard was the son of Ralph Izard (1741/2-1894), a U.S. Senator from South Carolina. Born in Richmond, England, George Izard was brought up in Paris and attended schools in Charleston, S.C. and New York and graduated at Philadelphia College in February 1792.
