John Williams Walker was born 1783 Aug. 12 to Rev. Jeremiah and Mary Jane Graves Walker in Amelia County, Va. He entered Princeton in 1805 and graduated A.B., 1806. He was plagued with poor health and had hemorrages his entire life. In 1809 he was admitted to the bar in Petersburg, Ga. He purchased land offered for sale by the U.S. government in Madison County, Miss. Territory in 1809. He married Matilda Pope on 1810 Jan. 30 and moved to Madison County in 1810 June.
He was licensed to practice law in the Madison County Superior Court of Law and Equity. In 1811 October he became attorney for the territory. He was a co-founder of the Planters and Mechanics Bank of Huntsville in 1814. He rejected his appointment as secretary of the Ala. Territory by President Madison in 1817 Dec.
He was elected to the Ala. Territorial Legislature in 1818. He was reelected to the legislature in 1818 Nov. where he was selected speaker of the house and led the drive to admit the territory as a state. President Monroe appointed him U.S. territorial judge on 1819 Mar. 2. In 1819 Apr. he was elected to the Ala. Territory Constitutional Convention where he was selected president of the convention.
In 1819 Nov. he was selected by the Ala. Assembly as one of the state's first two U.S. senators. Due to poor health, he moved back to Madison County, Ala. and resigned his Senate seat on 1822 Nov. 21. He and his wife had seven children: Mary Jane; Percy; John James; LeRoy Pope; Charles Henry; William Memorable; and Richard Wilde. He died 1823 Apr. 23 in Madison County, Ala.
Matilda Pope Walker was born in 1791 to Col. LeRoy and Judith Sale Pope of Wilkes County, Ga. She received her education at Bethlehem College, Pa. She married John Williams Walker on 1810 Jan. 30.
Mary Jane Walker was born 1810 Dec. 2 to John Williams and Matilda Pope Walker in Madison County, Miss. Territory. She received her education between 1821-1824 at the school of Mesdame Sigoigne near Philadelphia, Pa.
