Anna Maria Porter, like her sister Jane, was a popular English novelist and poet. Precocious and nurtured in her early years, Anna Maria published a collection of short stories at the age of sixteen, and went on to write a number of romantic novels. Her novels were popular in her day, but critics generally dismissed their contrived, illogical plots. Although her works have not aged well, they were influential in their portrayal of good characters in a corrupting world.
