Community-based public historian, active in Washington, D.C., as a researcher, writer, editor, lecturer, cultural tourism professional, and public administrator, from 1965 to 2009.

Originally from Milwaukee, Kathryn Schneider Smith moved to Washington, D.C., in 1965 to work as assistant press secretary to Sen. Gaylord Nelson. Highlights of her career as a Washington, D.C., public historian include creating the D.C. History Curriculum for D.C. Public Schools (1977-1981); active service on the board of directors of the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. (board member,1977-1993; vicepresident, 1985-1989; president, 1989-2003; chair, 2006-2007); role as founding editor of the Historical Society's journal, Washington History (1989-2003); and her leading role, first as a consultant, then as an executive director in the creation of Cultural Tourism, DC (1996-2005). She also served as a consultant to the Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage from 1995 to 1996. Smith was also the author, co-author, or editor of many articles and publications including City of Magnificent Intentions: A History of the District of Columbia (1983); Port Town to Urban Neighborhood: The Georgetown Waterfront of Washington, D.C. (1989); "Remembering U Street," Washington History, (Fall/Winter 1997-1998); and The Washington D.C. Stories Continues, 1996-2006 (2008).
