U.S. Senator from S.C.; native of Laurens, S.C.; educated at Princeton (1870-1871) and University of Virginia (1871-1873); member, S.C. House, 1886-1892, serving as speaker in 1890; elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, where he served from 4 Mar. 1891, to 3 Mar. 1897; Irby was not a candidate for reelection for his own seat, but ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 1897 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his cousin Joseph H. Earle (1847-1897).
